An 18th-century royal palace, its Throne Room and its formal gardens, twenty minutes from Lisbon.
Wedding filmRaquel & TomásAbout Palácio de Queluz
The National Palace of Queluz was built from 1747 as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family, and was home to three generations of the court. Its architecture moves from Baroque to Rococo and Neoclassicism, and it sits between Lisbon and Sintra, about twenty minutes from the city centre.
For events, the palace opens some of its most famous rooms: the Throne Room, its largest hall, for around 200 seated guests; the Music Room; the Ambassadors’ Room with its tile panels; and the Robillion staircase, terraces and gardens for cocktails at sunset.
Filming a wedding at Palácio de Queluz
Queluz is pure cinema: gilded mirrors, chandeliers, painted ceilings and long perspectives through the state rooms. We plan camera positions carefully, because the palace is a national monument and every movement has to respect it.
The gardens give the day its light: an aperitif on the terraces as the sun goes down, portraits along the formal hedges and fountains, then dinner in the Throne Room. It is one of the few places in Portugal where a wedding can feel like a royal ball.
Planning your wedding film at Palácio de Queluz
The palace is a sequence of grand rooms, each with its own light, from the Throne Room and the Music Room to the Robillion staircase and the gardens. The time of day changes which rooms look their best. Around Lisbon and the Atlantic coast, the sun sets at about 9 pm in June and July, about 8 pm in early September and about 7 pm in early October, so we plan the timeline backwards from sunset.
- Plan portraits in the gardens and on the staircase, where the light is soft in the afternoon.
- Ask the palace which rooms are used for the ceremony and the dinner, and if there are rules for lighting and music, so we can prepare.
- A longer timeline helps here: allow time to move between the rooms without hurry.
- Confirm with the venue the rules for filming equipment inside the palace.
Getting there: Palácio de Queluz is about 13 km from Lisbon airport, about 15 minutes by car without traffic.
